Coming soon: Antarctica Calling

An immersive podcast from Antarctic tourism fieldwork

What does Antarctica sound like?

Beyond the postcard image of pristine silence and untouched wilderness, visits to Antarctica are full of sound: ship engines cutting through sea ice, penguin colonies bursting with bird calls, seals singing, waves crashing against the hull, whales spouting, glaciers thundering, boots squeaking on snow, and the hum of human presence in one of the most remote places on Earth.

Antarctica Calling is a podcast that explores Antarctic tourism through listening. Created as part of my PhD research in Polar Studies at the University of Cambridge, the series combines field recordings made at Antarctic sites and aboard expedition ships with reflections on travel, tourism, and the changing soundscapes of the Antarctic.

Through immersive audio and storytelling, the podcast asks what it means to experience Antarctica not only through sight, but through sound — and what listening can reveal about our relationship with place, environment, and the growing human presence on the continent.

Part documentary, part soundscape, and part research journey, Antarctica Calling invites listeners aboard to hear Antarctica from the inside.
